Maxim Gorky called Aldington's "Death of a Hero" an "evil, creepy desperation" book, testifying to the final rot of the bourgeois world.
"This book is a tombstone," Aldington wrote, "a monument, perhaps unsophisticated, to a generation that fervently hoped, fought honestly and suffered deeply."
