The stories of Pavel Frost, included in this collection, at the first reading can be taken for quite realistic works. Elements of surrealism and symbolism are introduced in them so restrained and unconventional that only the reader with a philosophical attitude can immediately notice them and appreciate them. "Dance as a concentrate of life," "Green light on the way to the abyss" - such subtitles unobtrusively expand the narrative about the life of Russian immigrants in America, help to translate it from a household plan to a household. Scattered here and there sequins of humor, stylistic finds, aphoristic sensibilities bring into the prosaic fabric that element, without which no art can exist: unpredictability.
