Donald Reilly's book is dedicated to the Soviet equivalent of the American baby boomer generation, the children of the Cold War, who now play a prominent role in social life. Carefully listening to the stories of Moscow and Saratov graduates of English special schools about their life experience, the author shows why the Soviet baby boomers, who got the most out of what the Soviet system could offer, not being its opponents and not expecting its collapse, still found themselves quite ready to accept Gorbachev's perestroika and start a new life in the new Russia and abroad. Analyzing the oral history of Soviet baby boomers, the author reveals the internal mechanisms that destroyed the Soviet system. Donald Reilly is a professor at the University of North Carolina.
