The famous Russian traveler, geographer, ethnographer, writer, researcher of the Far East, a real member of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society, Vladimir Klavdievich Arsenyev (1872-1930) devoted his life to Siberia. Arsenyev gave a description of the relief of Primorye and for the first time examined the mountain system of Sihote-Alina in detail; found the unknown origins of the largest rivers of the region and received the first information about their depths, current modes; studied animals, birds, fish and plants of the Primorye; proved that the Nanaites, The Udegeians, orochs are descendants of the ancient and ancestral population of the Far East and Siberia; recorded oral stories about the everyday lives and beliefs of the indigenous peoples of Siberia. The result of his expeditions were rich in content works, written in brilliant literary language, as well as fiction books "On the Ussuriysky Land", "Dersu Uzala" (withstood many editions and were translated into more than 30 languages).
The film "Dersu Uzala", shot by Japanese director Akira Kurosawa, won an Academy Award.
