Brief annotation
Maxim Gorky (1868-1936) was one of the key figures of the literary turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and Soviet literature, writer, publicist and public figure. The founder of the method of socialist realism. The first of his stories Gorky, obsessed with the dream of "other people", introduced into Russian literature the image of a semi-real, semi-imaginary noble barefoot, who by 1902 mutated into the inhabitant of the shelter. The play "At the Bottom" is undoubtedly one of the pinnacles of Gorky's work. The main theme of the play "At the bottom" is truth and lies.
The play contrasts the elder Luke with his quiet and eternal truths and the vociferous resonator Satin, who, according to Marxist criticism, embodies the awakening of the proletarian consciousness.
Throughout his creative biography, like "The Onion Luke," Gorky himself tried to "bring mankind a dream of gold" - "the dream of the socialist revolution as a panacea for all human suffering" (V. Khodasevich). And even his own "Untimely Thoughts" didn't seem to sober him up.
In addition to the play "At the bottom" this edition includes the play "Meshchane" as well as the essay "Gorky."
