Poor People (1845) is the debut novel by F. M. Dostoyevsky, which made the writer famous in literary circles before publication. Among the very first readers was D.V. Grigorovitch, who read the manuscript of N.A. Nekrasov: "On the last page, when the old Girl said goodbye to Varenka, I could no longer own myself and began to sob; I took a furtive look at Nekrasov: tears were also streaming down his face." After reading, in the morning they came to Dostoevsky to report on the strong impression made by the novel. Nekrasov handed the manuscript to Belinsky with the words: "The new Gogol appeared!..!" In January 1846, the novel "Poor People" was published in Nekrasov's almanac "Petersburg Collection": this is how readers first got acquainted with Dostoevsky's work.
