Understanding of teaching came to Russia from Byzantium, which received it, in turn, along with the ancient heritage: in the Greek teacher hierarchy there was a place for artisans, literacy students, and sages, helping to find the meaning of life. This model always followed or, at least, tried to follow the Russian education. Nowadays, however, teachers are often looked at as an official, and teachers are trying to translate into a service sector where sages have no place. Natalia Petrova, talking about the daily life of the Russian school for three centuries and bringing a lot of interesting details, constantly reminds of the purpose of "intelligent proletarians", as Russian teachers once called themselves. In short, the task of this book - not to replace the textbook history of pedagogy, and to protect the profession - and to do it in such a way that it was interesting to read not only teachers, but also to all who studied or once studied in school.
