"Love Your Neighbor" (1939) is a novel about German immigrants forced to wander through pre-war Europe. They hide, starve, sneak across borders, many of their loved ones in concentration camps. Having lost his homeland and habitual way of life, being exposed to mortal danger, the heroes of Remark still find the strength for compassion and love.
The novel was first published only in 1941, immediately after its adaptation.
