In his youth, Ysroel-Yeshua Singer (1893-1943), the son and grandson of rabbis, broke, like many in his generation, with the traditional world and after many years of wandering and hard work achieved a literary vocation, becoming one of the most popular prose writers of the 1920s-1930s in the Yiddish literature. During World War II, I.-I. Singer began to look for ways to reconcile with his own past. The more sinister rumors about the fate of Polish Jews reached the United States, the more he felt longing for the lost world of childhood. In 1943, Singer began writing a memoir, "On a World That No Longer." But the barely begun work was interrupted by the sudden death of the writer. A relatively small fragment was published after the writer's death. Now that the works of I.-I. Singer began to appear one by one in translations into Russian, the reader will find in these memoirs a detailed auto-commentary on the works of one of the most interesting Jewish writers of the 20th century.
