"Red and Black" (1830) - the most famous work of Stendhal, but glorified its creator only many years after his death.
The main character, Julien Sorel, an ambitious and ambitious young man of unenviable origin, decides to study theology, because he believes that this is how he will make a career in the shortest possible time. And he doesn't stop at nothing for the sake of fulfilling his plans. The first novel in European literature about a career long angered representatives of the Church around the world: the Vatican in 1864 included it in the "Index of Prohibited Books", Nicholas I in 1850 also imposed a ban on its publication.
As you know, Stendhal as the basis of the plot took a note from the Grenoble newspaper, obviously, the fate of the main character was typical for that time. But after almost two centuries, little has changed. Neither in the way to make money and become famous, nor in the secrets of seducing women and conducting love affairs.
