Brief annotation
The poem "Divine Comedy" has been a symbol of spiritual rebirth for seven centuries. Meanwhile, at the time of writing in 1307, its creator was a complete loser: supporting the interests of opponents of the ruling party, Dante Aleghieri was accused of abuse of office and expelled from Florence.
Not finding help alive, the former politician and thinker called on the dead to stand up for him and created the first work not in Latin, but in Italian, which forever glorified the national literature of Italy and combines the features of both ancient and Christian culture. Along with Virgil's "Eneida" and the Bible, this book is still considered prophetic.
In his vision, Dante, accompanied by the greatest playwright of antiquity, Virgil, descended into the afterlife, where he passed through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. And the lower the travelers went down to Hell, the more the hero Dante imbued with sympathy for sinners - the forgotten and glorious heroes of antiquity. In this symbolism-filled vision, everything - an animal, a stone, and even a man - plays its intended divine Providence role.
More than 500 years later, Dante's melancholic visions carried the visual images of the artist Gustave Dore into frightening lysing visual images. Inspired by medieval images, Botticelli paintings and Michelangelo frescoes, The Romantic Dore created about 150 engravings for the poem from 1855 to 1869. The first edition with illustrations for the part "Hell" was completely sold out immediately after the release of circulation in 1861. At the same time, Gustave's friend Dore Theofil Gthier will write: "There is no other artist who could illustrate Dante better than Dore. He has the visionary view that the Poet has. The artist creates an atmosphere of hell: underground mountains and precipices, gloomy sky, where there is never sun. He conveys this unearthly climate with stunning persuasiveness."
