Franz Kafka is one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, the most read and the most mysterious, "incomprehensible master and lord of the kingdom of the German language" (G. Hesse). His works were initially published in insignificant circulations, which also diverged with difficulty. Now they are at odds with millions of copies, but Brecht's observation that Kafka's work "needs a clue as in a secret writing" remains true.
