The symphonic poem was written in 1894-1895, first performed in Cologne on November 5, 1895 under the direction of Wulner. The author refused to make public the program of the work. "To facilitate understanding," he said, "both themes of Ulenspiegel are sufficient, which, varying, go through the entire work until the final scene of Thiel's execution." However, in one of his private letters, Strauss revealed exactly what episodes of the folk tales of Thiel he used: "The Trouble in the Bazaar," "Shutov's Sermon," "Til's Courtship," "The Fooling of The Scholasty Professors," "The Trial of Thiel and His Execution."
