The composition was performed in 1905 in Vienna under the direction of the author in the concert "Union of Creative Musicians. From Bruno Walter's memoirs: "The evening program included only songs with an orchestra, but it turned into a real festival in honor of Mahler..." The cycle of songs with the orchestra is written on the poems of Ruckert, who survived the tragedy of the death of his child. From conversations with Maler: "A man is like a dead child: he still does not get the most necessary, what his soul and body need to grow until it is too late." However, the generalized meaning of this composition turned into Mahler's own tragedy: in 1907, his daughter died.
