This text is a true description of the crash of the "Essex" and the subsequent suffering of twenty people who found themselves on three weak welbots in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Essex was torpedoed by a keith in 1819, and the book was written by a surviving first assistant captain named Owen Chase. The crash of the whaler, or rather the proposed story about him, served as one of the two main sources of inspiration for Herman Melville's "Moby Dick" (the second is "Mocha Dick, or White Whale of the Pacific" by Reynolds in 1839). True, while Melville's narrative ends with a whale attack on a ship, in describing the Essex wreck with an attack, everything is, in fact, just beginning. Chase's book is almost entirely devoted to wandering the Ocean...
