Brief annotation
Based on the real events of Ludwig (Lala) Sokolov's life, Heather Morris's novel is a testament to the human spirit and the power of love that can flourish even in the darkest places. And it is hard to imagine a darker place than the Auschwitz/Birkenau concentration camp.
In 1942, Lala, like other Slovak Jews, was sent to Auschwitz. Once there, he, thanks to the fact that he speaks several languages, gets a tattoo artist job and with terrifying speed fills the numbers with new prisoners, and for this gets some privileges: a separate room, slightly better food and relative freedom of movement through the camp. One day in July 1942, Lale, prisoner 32407, puts on the hand of a trembling young woman number 34902. Her name is Gita. Despite their plight, despite the fact that every day may be the last, they fall in love and despite everything believe that they will be able to survive in these inhuman conditions. Although Lale's position as a tattoo artist is relatively better than the rest of the prisoners, it does not protect the SS from cruelty. Again and again he risks his life to help his comrades in misfortune and especially Gita and her friends. Despite the constant threat of death, Lala and Gita never cease to believe in the future. And in this future they will definitely live together happily ever after...
