The novel by Chang Wei " The Old Ship " covers the first forty years of the People's Republic of China. Three generations of the Sui, Zhao and Li families have been through numerous campaigns of those years, from land reform to the "cultural revolution". On their example, the author attempts to look at the history of his country in a different way, trying to identify properties of national character that were concealed or left aside by writers of the time.
In China and Taiwan, the book withstood 20 editions, with a total circulation of 1.2 million copies.
