Umberto Eco is a famous Italian writer, author of the world bestsellers "The Name of the Rose" and "Foucault's Pendulum", winner of major literary prizes, founder of scientific and artistic magazines, specialist in semiotics, cultural historian. His works have been translated into forty languages. The essays included in this book were born from the report "The Problem of Open Work" read at the 12th International Philosophical Congress in 1958.
