In the Middle Ages, it was believed that it was on Loch Derg, located in Northern Ireland, in County Donegal, that the entrance to purgatory was located, a place where souls were too sinful for paradise but too righteous for hell. According to legend, the passage there opened the first and great saint of Ireland Patrick, specifically for persuading the little believers, so that they could go into purgatory and come out alive. Now there is no more entry, but every year Loch Derg visits from 8 to 10,000 pilgrims - and this despite the fact that the stay on it includes a mandatory three-day fast and 24-hour wakefulness.
