David Fishman's book is dedicated to the history of Shklov, a city in Belarus that became one of the centers of Eastern European Jewry at the end of the 18th century. Its heyday was short-lived - about 40 years, but during this time the Jews of Shklov had to face numerous historical challenges that Russian Jewry would deal with in the 19th century. Shklov was the center of Jewish printing, science, Gascala, the struggle of the Mitnageds and Hasids. The history of the Jewish Shklov is considered in the context of Russian history: the noble life of the city and the activities of Jews from Shklov at the court in St. Petersburg are described.
