The work of the outstanding French mediaist Jacques Le Goff examines the problem of historical periodization, which has not only a formal but also meaningful meaning: the transition to a new stage of development is accompanied by the denial of values by society previous period. It is such ideological fractures Le Goff considers system-forming: they allow to draw the boundaries between such epochs as Antiquity, the Middle Ages, the New Age. Separately, the scientist examines periods that are traditionally referred to in science as 'Middle Ages' and 'Revival'. The term 'Rebirth' originated in the works of 19th century scholars. It is difficult to determine the chronological framework of this period. Looking at one after another the signs that distinguish the Renaissance as an era from the previous time, Jacques Le Goff concludes that the Renaissance did not exist as a separate historical period. During the so-called 'long Middle Ages' there were many revivals (i.e. rises in any field of science or culture), but a fundamentally different historical epoch came only in the 17th century with the beginning of the industrial revolution. It was then that the 'long Middle Ages' came to an end and the New Time came.
