We do not want to retell the whole history of our country - it is simply impossible. We seek to shed light on what we consider to be a betrayal of the ideas that underpinned its historic mission, because we still feel that there is still hope to correct those mistakes before the twenty-first century finally comes into its own. We are deeply concerned about the course taken by the United States recently. Why does our country place its military bases in all corners of the globe, the total number of which, according to some estimates, exceeded a thousand? Why does the U.S. spend more money on its armed forces than all other countries combined? Why does our State still contain a huge arsenal of nuclear weapons, most of which are on constant alert, although, in fact, no country today poses an immediate threat to us? Why is a tiny minority of wealthy Americans allowed to exert such a powerful influence on u.S. domestic and foreign policy, while the masses suffer from declining living standards and their voices in politics are heard weaker? Why do Americans have to put up with constant surveillance, government interference in their personal affairs, disregard for civil liberties, and the loss of the right to privacy? This would horrify the founding fathers and previous generations of Americans. Why in our country are those driven by greed and narrow-minded selfishness rule those who advocate such social values as kindness, generosity, empathy for others, common interests and loyalty to national ideals? And this is only a small fraction of the questions that we will ask in the pages of this book. Although we do not hope that we will be able to find answers to all of them, we will try to present historical facts so that readers can delve into the questions that interested them.
