Bloody swell in the last years of the Russian Empire. The trial of Maidele Baylis on charges of ritual murder. In March 1911, the bloodless body of a boy was found near Kiev. Groups gravitating to right-wing beliefs decided that it was a ritual killing, and the police, with no direct evidence, arrested a Jew, Menachem Mendel Baylis, who worked as a clerk at a factory near the crime scene. Bayliss was tried in 1913. The jury eventually acquitted him, but ruled that the crime had signs of ritual murder. Robert Weinberg seeks to find out why the authorities accused this man, and thus discovers the extremes of anti-Semitism in pre-revolutionary Russia.
