The idea of causation permeated the entire composition; the events of the revolution were not an accident or a manifestation of the evil will of the revolutionaries, but stemmed from one of the other with logical necessity; Thiers were even reproached for historical fatalism. He was also accused of worshipping success; and indeed, he sympathizes with Mirabeau while Mirabo is at the pinnacle of his power; then his sympathy is transferred to the Girondists, whom he calls the most spoken and most generous people of the era - but at the same time he claims that they have damaged the cause of revolution and freedom and have fully deserved their fate. In turn, he sympathizes with Danton, Robespierre and, finally, Napoleon, changing the first two and quite justifying their execution, as soon as they are changed by happiness.
