The monograph is devoted to a topic that is little studied in domestic anti-science: the idea of the harmonic development of a citizen and its reflection in ancient Greek poetry, historiography, philosophical prose. The problem is considered against the background of comparative analysis of Hellenic mythology, Homer's epic, works by Archiloch, Tirtey, Feognid, Xenophana, Simonid of Keos, Bacchild and other ancient Greek poets of the classical period. Much attention is paid to the formation of ethical and aesthetic norms in life, literature and art, as well as in the system of education and physical education of Hellenes. All these questions are connected by the author with the history of the origin and heyday of the Olympic Games of antiquity. Other Greek festivals (Pythian, Nemei, Eastmay, Panathenai, etc.) as well as features of agones (holiday competitions) in the Hellenic colonies of the Northern Black Sea region are outlined briefly. The connection between religion, myth-making and the educational system of the ancient Greeks is shown. The book is addressed to philologists, historians, archaeologists and art historians. The monograph is illustrated with reproductions of the best works of ancient Greek sculptors and ceramic artists dedicated to athletes-agonists and various aspects of physical education and competitions of Hellenic citizens.
