The collection includes the most significant works by the outstanding Dutch historian and cultural scientist Johan Hysinga (1872-1945). Autumn of the Middle Ages is a poetic description of the sociocultural phenomenon of the late Middle Ages, a bright, rich encyclopedia of life, art, culture of Burgundy of the 14th and 15th centuries. Homo ludens is a fundamental study of the playful nature of culture, proclaiming the universality of the game phenomenon. In the essay Shadows of Tomorrow, The Darkened World, Man and Culture deeply explore the causes and consequences of the spiritual impoverishment of European civilization in the run-up to World War II and predict the rebirth of culture in the post-war period. Three articles are devoted to philosophical and methodological issues of history and cultural studies, theoretical and moral approaches to culture. The author's artistic talents are demonstrated by an ironic series of drawings dedicated to "domestic history". The publication is equipped with an extensive scientific reference apparatus.
