The books in the present edition are united by a disturbing thought: the liberal social order, which has been given many years of hard struggle and labor in Western countries, is now in crisis. And it is not only the external threats - terrorism, new authoritarian regimes and the growing popularity of diverse fundamentalist doctrines. The very ideas of the Enlightenment, which are at the heart of modern liberal societies, are being questioned. Strenger tries to prove that these ideas are not just the outdated dogma of "dead white men": they must and must fight; freedom is not a given, but a personal effort of everyone, tolerance is impossible without recognition of the right to rational criticism.
Carlo Strenger (b. 1958), Swiss and Israeli philosopher, psychoanalyst, social thinker of the center-left direction. He teaches psychology and philosophy at Tel Aviv University and writes columns in the newspapers Haaretz and Neue zurcher zeitung.
