The famous poet and translator A.S. Hare was born and raised in Ukraine. He died in 1999 after a long illness resulting from two botched surgeries.
I'm THE SON OF A BOY, WHAT'S DEAD IN THE BAKED BOY
(From oleg DEMCHENCO's article published on January 27, 2007)
There is a quiet, green street in the Southwest of Moscow, maybe you have heard? General Antonov.' In May, it is littered with fragrant drifts of cherry. You can hear the rustling of leaves, the buzzing of bees. On it I often visited the wonderful poet Anatoly Semenovich Seitz, who was at one time widely known: from 1961 to 1994 published nine of his poetry collections, and in translations in Russian - 40 books. These places he loved - they became his second homeland. The surroundings of the southern edge of the capital attracted him with quiet woods, light fields and brooding rivers. Here the poet could spend hours wandering around the spring birch tree - to remember Yesenin's poems or to compose his own. Here he often looked the wonderful poet Nikolai Kotenko, who lived next door - in the area of the subway station Konkovo ...
Many residents of the district still remember Anatoly Semenovich Hare. He worked hard and talentedly until the last days. His poems were published in thick magazines, anthologies and our newspaper. And in 2004, the publishing house "Vagrius" released his weighty (464 pages) one-volume - "All this life", timed to the 70th anniversary of the poet, to which he did not live all nothing.
The book opens with a beautiful poem,"Mamina Letters." Vladimir Solokhin noted at the time that this poetic masterpiece "will be included in the golden fund of Russian poetry, and if new times come for poets, will be included in textbooks, anthologies and almanacs." And today "Mother's Letters", like many other poems by Anatoly Hare, acquire a new meaning and will sound with piercing sadness.
