The huge cycle of literature about the "little man" was started by Nikolai Karamzin. It was he who opened the way to such classics as Nikolai Gogol, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Maxim Gorky and many others, truthfully telling in his works about the difficult, often tragic, life of the "lower" class. The writer Alexei Svirsky knew firsthand about this problem, who believed that the little joys and great troubles of the outcasts, forgotten, all humiliated, "extra" people were worthy of readers' attention.
