To let the red rooster and catch a goldfish is only a small fraction of what the russian state should do in a day. Word and deed is his motto, loyalty to his superiors is his principle, his double-thinking is his morality, violence is his instrument. Vladimir Sorokin's novella "The Day of the Oprichnik" is both a mess that can make a mockery laugh, and a disappointing prediction. Oprichnik feels great in the forty Moscow near future - because it is irreplaceable.
The "Day of the Oprichnik," first published in 2006, has been translated into twenty languages. In 2013, the story was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize.
