On 6 September 1998, the Japanese national newspaper Asahi named Richard Sorge as one of the 100 outstanding men of the 20th century, despite the fact that the man had violated Japanese laws and had been executed as a criminal, the first foreigner in the history of modern Japan. This recognition is not accidental, because in Japan, as elsewhere in the world, the real heroes are appreciated, and the Japanese considered sorge worthy of inclusion in this list. On merit, do we rate Sorge today? More than half a century has passed since he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, the country he served has disappeared, moral guidelines and perceptions of the world order have changed.
