Memoirs by Grigory Philipson (1809-1883), general from Infanteria, the punishing ataman of the Black Sea Cossack army and chief of staff of the Caucasian Army cover the period from the author's youth to 1847, but their central theme is one of the crucial periods of the Caucasian War (1835-1847), coinciding with the beginning of the reign of Imam Shamil. The author, being an unsurpassed connoisseur of the Caucasian region and a direct participant in the events, gives a detailed, but at the same time accessible description of the life and mores of Russia at the time, while not hiding his principled and independent position, which is sometimes led him to conflict.
