Leo Mehlis was called "Stalin's Shadow" and "Stalin's Right Hand," but the definition of "faithful companion" fits him best. Mehlis's memoirs of Joseph Stalin and his work in various posts span from 1921 to 1950.

From the memoirs of Leo Mehlis for the first publication were selected memories relating to the period 1921 - 1930, when Lev zakharovitch worked under the direct guidance of Stalin (including personal assistant to the Chief), as well as memories of the work Mehlis as a representative of the Supreme Command Stakes on the Crimean front in 1942.

The first part of the published memoirs is interesting as a testimony of an eyewitness and participant of events about the creation of the Soviet state apparatus.

The second part illuminates the period that has become one of the most difficult in Mehlis's life. Lev zakharovitch talks about why he found himself in the role of a scapegoat, on which all the mistakes of the command of the front were piled, including those, which he actively tried to prevent.
