The book about Richard Wagner, first published in German in 1895, was the first great theoretical study of Houston by Stuart Chamberlain (1855-1927), the basis of all his subsequent work and the anticipation of all the ups and downs of his Compositions. Describing Wagner, Chamberlain seeks to combine a brief biography, a review of major literary works and a general overview of musical dramas. The extreme partiality of Chamberlain's portrait of the composer makes it possible to see quite definitely the greatness of genius, and those gloomy features of Wagner's ideology and the "Wagnerites" that never allowed him and his successors to win the struggle for transformation of the theatrical audience and all of humanity.
