Brief annotation
The fate of Valentina Visconti, Duchess of Orleans, can become a symbol of the most difficult period in the history of medieval France - the reign of Charles VI mad (1380-1422), king of the Valois dynasty, who went mad twelve years after his ascension to the Throne. From 1392 to 1422, France was torn apart by greedy princes of royal blood who tried to rule on behalf of the mentally ill king. The royal court became the focus of intrigues, secret collusion and coups. Particularly fierce was the power rivalry between two cousins - duke of Burgundy John the Fearless and Duke of Orleans Louis, who was married to the heroine of the book, Valentina Visconti. Valentina could not stay away from the struggle of the warring parties, later known by the names Armagnac and Bourguignons. Under pressure from her enemies, who accused her of trying to poison Charles VI, she had to leave the royal court. Meanwhile, the struggle for power and influence reached its climax in 1407, when John the Fearless ordered the assassins to sit in the street and kill his enemy, Louis of Orleans. Neither the murderer nor the initiator of this high-profile crime was punished by royal justice. Moreover, they exposed themselves as saviors of the king and kingdom from the tyranny of Louis of Orleans and made excuses. Valentina, who pleaded with Charles VI to be punished, was defeated and died a year after her husband's death. The author of the book, the French historian Emile Cola, presents the history of women in the era of the Hundred Years War, highlighting the problem of power and society.
