The book by the German historian Yvonne Kleinmann examines the process of formation and interaction of Jewish communities and elites in St. Petersburg and Moscow. In the 19th century, the two capitals of the Russian Empire were a kind of field of experimentation in Jewish politics. Did they manage to get rid of their self-awareness as migrants and become St. Petersburg and Moscow Jews, and maybe even St. Petersburgers and Muscovites? Looking at specific examples and based on various sources (official documents, correspondence, Russian and Jewish periodicals of the time), the author provides answers to these and many other questions.
