The image of M. I. Kutuzov (1745-1813) is inextricably linked with his era. His complex, contradictory figure is the very embodiment of the Patriotic War of 1812. The anthology includes rare documents, fragments of correspondence, memoirs, characterizing him not only as a statesman and commander, but also as an extraordinary person. Kutuzov's activity (primarily as commander-in-chief of the Russian army in 1812) receives new lighting in the book, in many ways different from the assessments of the former official science, appears in all its ambiguity, at the crossroads of opinions.
