В 1831 году состоялась первая публикация статьи Н. В. Гоголя «Несколько мыслей о преподавании детям географии». Поднятая в ней тема много значила для автора «Мертвых душ» — известно, что он задумывал написать целую книгу о географии России. Подробные географические описания, выдержанные в духе научных трудов первой половины XIX века, встречаются и в художественных произведениях Гоголя. Именно на годы жизни писателя пришлось зарождение географии как науки, причем она подпитывалась идеями немецкого романтизма, а ее методология строилась по образцам художественного пейзажа. Опираясь на понятие географического воображения, разработанного в интеллектуальной истории за последние несколько десятилетий, И. Видугирите впервые рассматривает интертекстуальные пересечения творчества Гоголя с географическим дискурсом его времени. Автор не только прослеживает связь между пространственными образами писателя и конкретными географическими и картографическими источниками, но и показывает, что Гоголь одним из первых в России сформулировал принципы, которые легли в основу современной географии.

In 1831, the first publication of N.V. Gogol's article "Several Thoughts on Teaching Children Geography" took place. The theme raised in it meant a lot to the author of "Dead Souls" - it is known that he planned to write a whole book about the geography of Russia. Detailed geographical descriptions, based in the spirit of scientific works of the first half of the 19th century, are also found in Gogol's works of art. It was during the years of the writer's life had to develop geography as a science, and it was fueled by the ideas of German romanticism, and its methodology was based on samples of the artistic landscape. Drawing on the concept of geographical imagination developed in intellectual history over the past few decades, I. Vidugirite for the first time examines the intertextual intersections of Gogol's work with the geographical discourse of his time. The author not only traces the connection between the writer's spatial images and specific geographical and cartographic sources, but also shows that Gogol was one of the first in Russia to formulate the principles that formed the basis of modern modern Geography.
