Brief Summary
Czeslaw Milosz is today considered one of the greatest Polish poets; according to Joseph Brodsky, who was friends with Milos, he is perhaps the greatest poet of the 20th century. In 1980, Milos, "who with fearless clairvoyance showed the insecurity of man in a world torn apart by conflict," was awarded the Nobel Prize. Until his old age, Milos kept his energy and perseverance, remained a strikingly hardworking and prolific poet. Its main trait can be called the appetite for life, with which the bitter wisdom, sense of distance, understanding of the hierarchy of phenomena were combined. Like Gogol and Dostoyevsky, Ventslova writes, he felt that the world was in evil and full of suffering; but, as Miscavige in Pan Tadeushe, he was able to see and convey the infinite attractiveness of being. The essence of poetry for him was the comprehension of the word "is" (the only word that defines God). The mature and late Milosis is not without reason compared with Goethe.
